A Brief History of Marrakech

Marrakech Koutoubia Mosque in 1925

Established in 1062 by Abu Bakr ibn Umar of the Almoravids, Marrakech quickly blossomed into a thriving imperial city and a center of culture, commerce, and power in North Africa. Originally a fortified settlement, it soon became the capital of the Almoravid Empire, ruling over a vast territory from the Atlas Mountains to Al-Andalus in southern Spain.

During the 12th and 13th centuries, the city fell under the reign of the Almohads, who made Marrakech their imperial center and constructed some of its greatest landmarks, including the iconic Koutoubia Mosque and extensive city walls. Later, under the Saadian dynasty in the 16th and 17th centuries, the city experienced a remarkable renewal — grand palaces were built, sophisticated gardens were designed, and the rich traditions of artistry and craftsmanship blossomed.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Alawite dynasty, which still reigns in Morocco today, took control of the city and maintained its political and cultural significance. Marrakech remained a key hub for commerce and a vibrant meeting place for traders, artists, and travelers from Africa, Arabia, and Europe.

Today, Marrakech is a city where past and present blend effortlessly. It stands as a symbol of Moroccan culture — a place where rich traditions, architectural masterpieces, and a vibrant way of life come together to tell a story that spans nearly a thousand years. It’s a destination that invites you to explore, appreciate, and become a part of its remarkable journey.
